Carissa’s struggle with her body image changed when she entered her twenties. Feeling more confident and at peace with herself, she stated, “Don’t try to compare yourself to anyone else. Don’t try to be someone else. I think being healthy and strong is the most beautiful thing.”

She started a female-empowerment nonprofit, Moore Aloha, which has three tenets: “Follow your dreams,” “Be authentic,” and “Help others.” “I want to leave a message that I love surfing and get to do what I love, but I’ve also gone through a lot of challenges,” said Carissa. “I want other girls to know I understand what they’re going through.”
